Im looking for a manual camera that is good in all apsects for b&w photography?
I want to start a small photography business since I have received compliments on my work but I am using a camera from school and wish to purchase my own. Im looking for a manual camera that is good overall and wont cost a whole lot of money, just something that’ll produce great B&W quality pictures to start with and I’ll eventually move on up. Im open to all suggestions since there is so many cameras out there. Thanks a lot – L.
Every body had good advices on film camers, I suggest strongly to go digital. It will be much cheaper in the long term, believe me.
You can choose whatever digital camera you want, a dSLR would be the best, but since the cheapest dSLR starts from $550, you can go with a reular point and shoot digital. I have used canon A520 (sold new on internet for around $150) which provides lots of manual settings.
next you need post processing (Remember, when you clicked the shutter you’re only half way through! the rest half is done on your computer).
for a photo-processingn software I recommend GIMP which is as powerful as photoshop, but is totally free.
You also need a noise reduction software. GIMP (and photoshop) have built-in filters, but “NEATImage” and “Noise Ninja” also produce very good results. (Neat Image is free for personal use.)
here’s a quick tutorial I made as an answer to another question here. follow through these steps and you’ll have great B&W photos in no time!
1. Shoot the photo with your digtal camera.
2. Download and install GIMP. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/ or GIMPshop (which is the GIMP, but modified to look like photoshop)
3. open your newly shot photo in GIMP.
4. Open the Layers dialog box.
5. Duplicate the original image (Ctrl+D) (Never modify the original photo, modify duplicate layers to have a backup of the original one).
6. Desaturate the photo (Layer->Colors->Desaturate or Shift+Ctrl+U)
7. Now open the curves Dialog (Layer->Colors->Curves or Ctrl+M). Play with the curve and see how the image changes. try to make a slight “S” shaped curve to enhance the contrast.
8. “Save as..” your photo.
9. Serve chilled, Enjoy!!!
