Is this a good lens to use for a Canon rebel eos?
I just bought a Canon rebel eos over the winter and i’m really interested in sports photography. I have already have a small lens but doesn’t really do anything for me right now. I was looking around at lens’s and I saw the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L. This was the one that was in my price range. Will this work with my canon? Thanks!
Yes, the Rebel is compatible with all Canon lenses made since 1987 (including both EF and EF-S series).
The 70-200mm f/4L is a gorgeous lens.
- Light and easy to hold (1.6 lbs. compared to the f2.8 version at 2.9 lbs.)
- Still quite fast (is a fixed f4 compared to other zooms that might go from f/4.5-5.6)
- An excellent intro to the professional L Series range
- Excellent quality optics. Canon is unsurpassed in the quality of their lenses (IMHO) and this one is no exception.
Have you considered the IS (Image Stabilized) version? While certainly more expensive, it will give similar shooting results to a Non-IS f2.8 lens. I.e. f/4 at 1/125s is the same exposure as f2.8 at 1/250s. But once you start using a shutter speed that is less than the reciprocal of the length of the lens (e.g. a 200mm lens at 1/250s, 70mm at 1/60 etc) you seriously risk camera shake when hand held. The IS version compensates for this and will easily let you use a shutter speed of half that. So you could use the IS f/4 at 1/125 when you would otherwise need the f/2.8 at 1/250 without any difficulty. This is usefull in low light conditions.
Having said that…check out the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 EX. It is in the professional series of Sigma lenses and it has similar build quality and optics to the Canons (a pro could pick the difference when viewing the photos…but not by much) – but at a much lower price. Using a non Canon lens will not void your warranty or anything silly like that. The fact that it is a whole stop faster (f/2.8 vs f/4) means you can use a shutter speed that is twice as fast. If you are shooting sports then this really comes in handy – being able to use a faster shutter speed means less subject motion blur and sharper images.
While both options I.S. or f/2.8 address the same issue of usable shutter speed – they do it in different ways. The I.S. will let you use a longer shutter speed to compensate for lack of light. But the other side of this is that even though the the lens might not move – the subject might. This means a longer shutter speed will capture more subject movement.
Whereas the f/2.8 will actually gather more light so that that a faster shutter speed can be used. This means there will be less subject movement.
In summary….
Go for the Canon f/4 if it fits you budget! It is a fantastic lens.
However, consider going for the f/4 IS version or tryout the Sigma if there is one at your local camera shop – and decide whether the extra weight is a worth the faster speed. Either of these options will let you get sharper images with less chance of camera shake and subject movement in the case of the f/2.8.
